The Nile Crocodile eats mammals, birds and fish. Young crocodiles eat insects and frogs. The female crocodile lays up to eighty eggs in a hole that she scraps in a sand bank. She guards the eggs against predators such as monitor lizards, jackal and birds of prey. When the eggs hatch the female crocodile carries the hatchlings to water in her mouth where she releases them. Very few baby crocodiles survive to reach adulthood because of the predators which wait for them.
